Its funny how night has a predetermined color set, the ever-present orange glow of street lights, the neon blues and velvet reds of low lit cafes and pubs. The colors are produced by very specific sources, illuminating dark corners, setting moods, or augmenting reality. No matter where you are in the city these colors remain consistent. As long as its night in the cityyou can expect to see them.

I never thought about how closely related this color set is with the nightlife, with urban production of the “night” until I thought about their individual sources. As city folk, we’ve defined these colors as “night”, endured them to a specific circumstance. I always took this for granted until I saw all these colors reflected in my glass one night. There, reflected in that glass was every color we’ve used to define the urban night. But the colors were removed from the source of their production, they were abstracted, and thus crystallized, not as tinted lamp shades, fluorescent tubing, or overhanging lights, but as distinct visual facets of the city night.
